Lake Mary Watering Rules — Three Things Most People Get Wrong
Seminole County’s irrigation rules aren’t the same as Volusia’s next door, and Lake Mary residents get caught out by three specifics in particular. Two of them work in your favour — if you know they exist. Here’s the schedule, plus the exemptions worth knowing about before you install a new lawn or replace a failing one.
What are the rules, and what exemptions apply to you?
The schedule — During Daylight Saving Time, residential irrigation is twice a week: odd-numbered addresses Wednesday and Saturday, even-numbered Thursday and Sunday. Non-residential runs Tuesday and Friday. During Eastern Standard Time it drops to once a week — odd addresses Saturday, even addresses Sunday. No irrigation between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. at any time of year, and the rules apply to private wells too, not just utility water.
Reclaimed water changes everything — A lot of Lake Mary communities are on reclaimed water, and reclaimed customers may irrigate twice a week year-round — including through the winter when everyone else drops to a single day. If you’re on reclaimed and you’ve been watering once a week all winter because that’s what your neighbour does, you’ve been under-watering your lawn for months. Check your community’s supply before you assume.
New sod is exempt — but you have to file for it — New landscaping can be watered any time of day, on any day, for the first 30 days, then every other day for the next 30. In Seminole County that exemption isn’t automatic: you must email your installation receipt to `waterconservation@seminolecountyfl.gov`. Most homeowners never hear this and end up either under-watering a new lawn or risking a violation. We send the receipt for you on every Lake Mary install.
Seminole County water utility customers get two free irrigation evaluations a year, carried out by licensed technicians — and they’ll install a free rain sensor while they’re there. Every automatic system in Florida is legally required to have a working rain shutoff device, and the typical sensor only lasts two to three years, so most of the ones we find on older systems have quietly stopped working.
